Teaching

Des Dinan teachingTeaching about the EU poses particular challenges. Given its constitutional structure and policy remit, the EU requires a multidisciplinary perspective. Having trained as a diplomatic historian, Professor Dinan approaches the EU primarily from the perspective of its origins and development in the post-World War II period. Having also studied international politics, he examines the dynamics of inter-governmental and inter-institutional relations not only in the history of European integration but also in the functioning of the contemporary EU. Given his position in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University, where he directs the MA program in International Commerce and Policy, Professor Dinan situates his teaching on the EU within the framework of international political economy. Complementing the EU’s policy mix and unusual institutional design, his teaching therefore draws largely on the disciplines of history, political science, international political economy, and law.
